All eyes on employability

A First Date

It’s THE day.

It starts with looking for the smartest shirt in the closet – a process which usually leads to laying down 5 options on the bed to choose from. Will that beige shirt go well with the dark navy jacket? I would like to funk things up a little with my neon-yellow sneakers but I’m afraid that’s going to send the wrong message… Maybe when we get to know each other better.

A whiff of perfume in the hair, but not too much (!), I don’t want to come across as too eager. Sweaty palms… Should I shower again? I know I have another 4 hours until our meeting but I’m not sure it’s enough time for my stomach to decide if it’s going to digest my breakfast after all or send it back the same way it got there.

I’m early. Going to the public bathroom to catch my breath (who gets fresh air in a bathroom?!?) because I ran to catch that bus. Because it suddenly struck me that a beige shirt makes me look a 100 years older, so I had to change into a classic white one just as it was time to leave for the bus. But I’m here now. I look at myself in the mirror: check if there’s nothing stuck in-between my teeth, practice my smile, my fake laugh and try out a few ice-breaker phrases. “Prepare to be charmed off your feet!” – I wink at myself and pretend I got something in my eye when someone else walks into the bathroom.

It’s showtime. No time for another panic attack, I’m going to stay strong. I have a good feeling that today I’m going to meet someone who’s going to change my life, someone special if you may…

Yes, a job interview is a lot like going on a date with a recruiter: you have to go through the whole razzle-dazzle and be the best version of yourself. Sometimes a recruiter is not going to like you and sometimes you’re not going to like him/her, that’s life. But it’s worth trying every time to find that perfect match!
