SUMMARY:CBIE2025 | Losing Students\, Losing Ground: What Attrition Tells Us About the International Student Experience.
DESCRIPTION:Join Wendy Curtis (Fanshawe College)\, Haley Shields (Edified)\, Elyse Pipitone (Edified) and Nannette Ripmeester (Director Expertise in Labour Mobility\, Etio) for their CBIE session about “Losing Students\, Losing Ground: What Attrition Tells Us About the International Student Experience” on November 4th at 15:45-16:45 (21:45 – 22:45 CEST) at the Centre des congrès de Québec\, 1000 Boulevard René-Lévesque E\, Québec. \nAbout the session: \n“With increasing policy scrutiny and international enrolment recalibrations\, Canadian institutions are entering a new era where retention of international students throughout every stage of their journey is no longer just a support issue—it’s a strategic imperative. Yet how many institutions are deeply examining the true cost of attrition? Not only in terms of lost revenue and sunk recruitment costs\, but also the human cost to students and families\, and the reputational risks to Canada’s brand as a welcoming and high-quality study destination. Every student who leaves early represents a lost opportunity for another learner\, a potential ambassador for Canada\, and a disrupted journey with long-term emotional and financial implications for the student. \nThis panel will connect the dots between early student experience\, the drivers of attrition\, and the multi-dimensional costs to students\, institutions\, and Canada’s international education ecosystem. Drawing on insights from the 2025 International Student Barometer (ISB) and retention data from across Canada\, Australia\, and New Zealand\, speakers will offer evidence-based reflections on where institutions can intervene earlier\, act more deliberately\, and design systems that build trust\, connection\, and resilience.” \nCBIE2025 is Canada’s International Education conference and will take place on 2-5 November 2025. This year’s conference will focus on innovation and recalibration in international education looking further into the future than ever before. The theme – The Future in Focus: Advancing International Education in Times of Uncertainty – will provide space for sector leaders\, practitioners\, and collaborators to share knowledge\, forge meaningful partnerships\, and explore new ideas to bring the future of international education into focus. \nInterested in knowing more? The session is built around the outputs of a research project of 5 higher education institutions in Canada. The focus is on the employer’s often-overlooked voice\, which provides evidence on how HEIs can help students best articulate the skills gained through their international experiences to future employers. Luévano\, and Nannette Ripmeester for their CAEI session about “Transforming knowledge into development: Sharing best practice about managing international student expectations ” at the Costa Rica Convention Center (CCCR) in San José\, Costa Rica. \nAbout the session: \nThis session explores key trends from a major global student satisfaction survey (100K+ international students). In keeping with its mandate\, CAEI offers a platform where all participants can engage in a broad conversation about higher education in the hemisphere and build networks and strategic alliances at the bilateral\, regional\, or multilateral levels. SUMMARY:NAFSA 2025 POSTER PRESENTATION | UNPACKING THE INTERNSHIP ABROAD EXPERIENCE: DATA-DRIVEN INSIGHTS FROM 250 EMPLOYERS
DESCRIPTION:Join Nannette Ripmeester (Expertise in Labour Mobility / etio) for an insightful NAFSA poster presentation about “Unpacking the internship abroad experience: Data-driven insigths from 250 employers” in San Diego\, California at the San Diego Convention Centre. \nThe NAFSA Annual Conference & Expo\, scheduled on May 27-30 2025\, will focus on the most diverse learning\, engagement\, and networking opportunities for international education professionals at all levels of experience and in every specialty. SUMMARY:ISB CO-CREATION WORKSHOP FOR NORTH-AMERICAN HEIs: HOW TO UNDERSTAND THE IMPACT OF THE STUDENT VOICE
DESCRIPTION:The International Student Barometer (ISB) has over the years given thousands of students the chance to disclose the upsides and downsides of their university experience – just check the 2024 International Student Experience report. This Spring\, we are inviting ISB participants from Higher Education Institutions in Europe (8 April 2025) and North-America (9 April 2025) to join a co-creation workshop on best practices\, looking into both the challenges and successes with the International Student Barometer. In times of change\, making informed decisions grounded in data is essential to better understand student needs and address their experiences and pain points. Together\, we can identify meaningful ways to enhance the student experience.  With this event\, hosted by Nannette Ripmeester for Etio\, we do not only aim to strengthen our ISB partnership\,  we want to work towards co-creating ways to improve the student experience across our institution. Interested in enhancing the student experience? Then register here!
