SUMMARY:CBIE2025 | Losing Students\, Losing Ground: What Attrition Tells Us About the International Student Experience.
DESCRIPTION:Join Wendy Curtis (Fanshawe College)\, Haley Shields (Edified)\, Elyse Pipitone (Edified) and Nannette Ripmeester (Director Expertise in Labour Mobility\, Etio) for their CBIE session about “Losing Students\, Losing Ground: What Attrition Tells Us About the International Student Experience” on November 4th at 15:45-16:45 (21:45 – 22:45 CEST) at the Centre des congrès de Québec\, 1000 Boulevard René-Lévesque E\, Québec. \nAbout the session: \n“With increasing policy scrutiny and international enrolment recalibrations\, Canadian institutions are entering a new era where retention of international students throughout every stage of their journey is no longer just a support issue—it’s a strategic imperative. Yet how many institutions are deeply examining the true cost of attrition? Not only in terms of lost revenue and sunk recruitment costs\, but also the human cost to students and families\, and the reputational risks to Canada’s brand as a welcoming and high-quality study destination. Every student who leaves early represents a lost opportunity for another learner\, a potential ambassador for Canada\, and a disrupted journey with long-term emotional and financial implications for the student. \nThis panel will connect the dots between early student experience\, the drivers of attrition\, and the multi-dimensional costs to students\, institutions\, and Canada’s international education ecosystem. Drawing on insights from the 2025 International Student Barometer (ISB) and retention data from across Canada\, Australia\, and New Zealand\, speakers will offer evidence-based reflections on where institutions can intervene earlier\, act more deliberately\, and design systems that build trust\, connection\, and resilience.” \nCBIE2025 is Canada’s International Education conference and will take place on 2-5 November 2025. This year’s conference will focus on innovation and recalibration in international education looking further into the future than ever before. The theme – The Future in Focus: Advancing International Education in Times of Uncertainty – will provide space for sector leaders\, practitioners\, and collaborators to share knowledge\, forge meaningful partnerships\, and explore new ideas to bring the future of international education into focus. \nInterested in knowing more? SUMMARY:Tunghai University: "Preparing for the Global World of Work"
DESCRIPTION:Join Nannette Ripmeester (Director Expertise in Labour Mobility\, Etio) for her session about “Preparing for the Global World of Work – a perspective from Europe and Canada” on October 29th\, 12:00 PM to 17:00 PM\, at Tunghai University in Taiwan. \nAbout the session: \n“The world of work is undergoing major shifts. This session will look at key trends impacting young people across the globe. Nannette Ripmeester will share the outcomes of research conducted in Europe (Erasmus+ projects) and Canada (funded by the Canadian government) to help us understand the impact of student mobility on skills. Understanding the importance of employability skills is critical for students as it will help to understand what skills will get them hired. However\, it is also imperative for higher education institutions as it helps to understand study choice and student recommendation better. Based on a global data set of over 122\,500 students\, Nannette will showcase the importance of creating a ‘line of sight’ between education and future jobs. Return on investment (ROI) is fundamental for this generation of students\, who make choices based on how well it prepares them for the (future) job market. Highlighting what other countries are doing in this respect is the stepping stone for a Q&A session between speaker and audience.” \nInterested in knowing more? Have a look here.

DESCRIPTION:Join Anne Marie Graham\,(Chief Executive\, UKCISA)\, Rhianna Skeates (International Careers Consultant\, Queen Mary University of London)\, Nannette Ripmeester (Expertise in Labour Mobility) for their BUILA  panel session  chaired by Ula Tang-Plowman (BUILA executive and UCLan\, Director of International Recruitment) on July 10th 2024\, at 12:00 – 13:00 (11:00 – 12:00 CET) at the Vox Conference Centre in Birmingham\, UK. \nSession Title: How do we integrate employability opportunities and outcomes into recruitment and marketing activity?  \n“Research shows 64% of students consider employment prospects as an influencing factor when choosing a university. And with UK universities marketing on an employability promise\, offering degrees with enhanced work skills and integrating career-focused activities into university life\, this is an opportunity that could put the UK on top. However\, in reality\, a high percentage of students say they are unprepared to achieve their careers goals after graduation\, which turns the opportunity into a threat.” \nThis session covers the importance of employability\, showcases activities that evidence eployability successes\, and cosiders how universities\, local government\, and emplyers can work collaboratively to meet our students’ employability expectations. \nThe British Universities’ International Liaison Association (BUILA) is a membership-led organization with a nationwide reach which suports the work and professional interests of staff members involved in international recruitment and liaison at UK higher education institutions. \nThe BUILA Conference\, scheduled on July 9-11th 2024\, will focus on the most important problems affecting the UK’s foreign student recruiting market\, with an emphasis on reputation and perception. Topics will include how UK HEIs may maintain their resilience in the face of political unpredictability and unfavorable media portrayals. Moreover\, the tactics that these institutions can use to prosper in the face of hardship as well as survive outside pressures will also be highlighted. SUMMARY:EAIE session: "What Makes Students Happy - A global deep-dive"
DESCRIPTION:Over the last 20 years\, there has been a significant surge in the number of international students across the globe\, and this trend is expected to continue. It is crucial to comprehend the factors that contribute to the satisfaction of such students as it plays a crucial role in shaping their well-being\, mental health\, and academic progress. To explore this further\, we will be combining global research data from the International Student Barometer (ISB) with the experience gained from two very distinct higher education institutions in Europe and Canada\, both using the ISB as a tool for informed data-driven decision-making. The goal of our session is to gain a deeper understanding of what makes students happy and its implications on future recommendations to prospective international students. \nNext to Nannette Ripmeester\, this pre-recorded EAIE 2023 session will feature two other speakers who will share their expertise. Kellie McMullin has been managing outbound mobility programs at Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) for the past 10 years and in this role works with students directly and witnesses the impact their mobility programmes have on their life. Eeva Liinamo-Liukku is a skilled business and marketing professional experienced in the ‘export’ of education\, commercialisation of university services\, partnership management as well as product and service marketing at Aalto University in Finland. \nAnd for all EAIE delegates interested in knowing more about Rotterdam? Have a look at our Rotterdam Digital Map for the best spots in ELM’s hometown! \nThe theme for the 2023 EAIE Conference is ‘Connecting currents’\, which pays tribute to Rotterdam’s rich maritime heritage and recognizes the vital role that water plays in the city\, both as a source of economic opportunity and a potential danger. Rotterdam is known as the gateway to Europe\, where the river meets the sea\, and people from all walks of life converge. In a similar way\, international education facilitates connections between various areas of knowledge\, expertise\, cultures\, and ideas. The issues that international educators tackle are diverse and dynamic\, ranging from virtual learning to climate change\, multilingualism to geopolitics. ‘Connecting currents’ is an invitation to explore and comprehend the complex world we live in\, drawing inspiration and learning from our diverse and thriving community.

SUMMARY:AIEA 2023: Understanding the International Student Experience in Germany
DESCRIPTION:The number of international students enrolled in higher education institutions worldwide has skyrocketed in the past two decades. Understanding what attracts international students to opt for a study destination and what will make them recommend the experience to others is key. Whether students decide to stay in their study destination\, return to their home country or go to a third country\, understanding what makes them brand ambassadors for their study destination is key. \nBased on the above\, DAAD\, Germany’s national body for Academic Exchange Services has run an international student satisfaction survey at a selection of German institutions in 2009\, 2010\, 2011\, 2016\, and 2018. From 2016 to 2018\, we noticed a decrease in the likelihood to recommend Germany as well as lower student satisfaction in a global comparison. If we look for reasons\, there are two main areas that stand out: the lower satisfaction around the arrival phase and the lower satisfaction around employability. Nevertheless\, based on the ISB 2018 data\, one of the main conclusions is: Germany offers a high-quality degree at a relatively low cost. The student satisfaction survey will be run again in the academic year 2022-23 to help understand how Germany is perceived as a study destination against other countries (such as Australia\, Canada\, the US and the UK) and what sets the German International Study experience apart. The main outcomes of the survey will be presented against a global comparison. \nThe 3 presenters each will bring their own perspective\, Nannette Ripmeester will paint the global comparison for the German findings (10 mins)\, Dr. Ursula Maria Egyptien Gad will elaborate on how DAAD will use the national findings (10 mins) and Dr Arnim Heinemann will elaborate how the data will be used at an institutional level and what messages have been implemented already based on similar data (10 mins). We will end the session with a structured discussion around the use of data in the internationalization of (marketing of) higher education. The session is designed in such a way that the discussion around the topic is paramount.
