All eyes on employability

Celebration Time!

In a few days, NAFSA will celebrate its 75th year in Washington, DC during its annual conference for the global higher education community. And it seems to be celebration time! As another major intled conference, the EAIE, is coming to Rotterdam, ELM’s hometown, in September. We will be kicking off that week with the celebration of 30 years of ELM with an inspiring event with “bites for thought” & drinks: Celebration Time!!

We encourage you to listen to the podcast “A Love Letter to Rotterdam” where Nannette Ripmeester talks about this interesting city, and to check out the Rotterdam Digital Map for more information!

NAFSA 2023
On the 31st of May, ELM will take part in a presentation on “Global Skill Shortages by 2030: Development Perspectives and Innovative Approaches” alongside the IFC World Bank Group and Kumasi Technical University from Ghana. Nannette Ripmeester will present the findings from the Global ISB benchmark with data from more than 150 highered institutions. The emphasis is on students’ employability, with a link to the skills graduates will need for the future world of work.

The session on “SDGs in Higher Education Marketing: Essential or Just Another Ingredient?” focuses on the role of SDGs in marketing. We expect an insightful panel discussion between the audience and the expert speakers, Piet Van Hove, Alejandra Otero, Daniel Ponce-Taylor, and Nannette Ripmeester. Nannette presents the connection between SDGs to employability and the impact on skills for the future.

ELM 30
To celebrate 30 years of Expertise in Labour Mobility, we want to dive into the value and impact of mobility. The internationalisation of higher education has played an evolving role in those 30 years. Looking ahead, what is the need for mobility? We have asked a group of international experts to shed their light on the future of mobility because, in an ever-changing world, education must prepare the ‘talent of the future’ to ensure our global society benefits the most. What’s required to make that happen?

APAIE 2023

Back in March 2023, while enjoying the good weather and culture of Thailand, ELM attended the APAIE Conference in Bangkok and delivered two sessions during the conference.

The first session measured the impact of learning mobility programmes on graduate employability. Nannette Ripmeester alongside Simon Watson and Katie Orr presented findings from their respective regions: Europe, Australia, and Canada. Nannette reported on 3 Erasmus+ projects in which ELM participates to elaborate on a set of tools to understand and optimize the value of a mobility experience. These 3 projects involve ErasmusSkills, ErasmusJobs, and ErasmusCareers.

The topic of the 2nd APAIE session centred around developing globally competent graduates within a mobility-confined world. ELM presented the ISB 2022 research data to illustrate the importance of employability for students when selecting and recommending their institutions. Alongside PSB Academy, University of Bayreuth, and Nova Scotia Community College they discussed how the world of employability changed due to the pandemic and the impact it has on graduates.
